How does acupuncture work?
Our patients in Vancouver often ask “what is acupuncture?” and “how does it work?” Acupuncture consists of using fine sterile needles placed at specific points around the body to help with different ailments. It is a traditional practice that is currently used in our modern times for back pain, neck pain, relaxation, as well as menstruation, fertility, depression and anxiety, and overall wellness! But how does it work? Our Vancouver acupuncturist can give some insight!
The Western View: Scientific Explanations
1. Nervous System Activation
Acupuncture stimulates nerves, particularly in the muscles and connective tissue, which sends signals to the brain and spinal cord. This triggers the release of endorphins and other neurotransmitters that help reduce pain and improve mood. It can also ‘reset’ the nervous system, telling the spasmed muscles to relax.
2. Improved Blood Flow and Healing
Studies show that acupuncture increases circulation in targeted areas, promoting tissue repair and reducing inflammation. This can be especially helpful for injuries, arthritis, and other musculoskeletal conditions.
3. Stress and Hormonal Regulation
Acupuncture appears to help balance the autonomic nervous system — the part responsible for “fight or flight” (sympathetic nervous system) and “rest and digest” (parasympathetic nervous system) responses. By promoting relaxation, it may reduce cortisol (the stress hormone) and help regulate sleep, digestion, and mood.
4. Fascia
Fascia is the tissue that is integral to muscle, tendon, and ligament function. Acupuncture can stimulate the strengthening and growth of fascia throughourt the body. This is beneficial for muscle and joint issues, sport injuries, and overuse injuries.
